DSS Eliminates IPOB/ESN Members in South-East, Bandits in Niger
The Department of State Services (DSS) has carried out successful operations against members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in the South-East, as well as bandits in Niger State. These actions are part of intensified efforts to combat insecurity across the country.
A senior police official, who requested anonymity, credited the improved security during the festive season, particularly in the South-East, to covert operations by the DSS. The source commended the leadership of the DSS for fostering enhanced collaboration with the military and other security agencies, which has enabled effective intelligence sharing and decisive operations.
The DSS reportedly identified and neutralized several IPOB and ESN camps across the South-East states before Christmas. In Imo State, strongholds in Orsu, Oru East, Oru West, and Orlu local government areas were dismantled. Operatives destroyed weapons, materials for making improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and shrines used by the group. In Enugu State, an operation in the Imilike Agu Forest in Udenu LGA resulted in the elimination of multiple IPOB/ESN commanders and the destruction of various weapons. Similar operations were conducted in Abia, Anambra, and Ebonyi states.
In Niger State, DSS operatives eliminated numerous armed bandits who had been terrorizing communities, particularly in Rafi local government area. The operation, which targeted bandits armed with AK-47s and using motorcycles to raid villages and loot shops, led to the recovery of weapons and motorcycles. This marks the second significant offensive by the DSS in the region within a week. Last Friday, DSS operatives neutralized three bandits in Dogon Dawa, Mairiga LGA.
Three weeks ago, the DSS also apprehended notorious bandits operating in the North-East and North-West regions, including in Zamfara and Borno states. In the latest operation in Niger State, bandits who recently attacked Uregi Village were intercepted during a meeting. While the DSS successfully neutralized the threat, three operatives sustained injuries but are reportedly recovering well.
