DR Congo Edges Super Eagles on Penalties, Ending Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Hopes
Nigeria’s bid to reach the 2026 World Cup ended in heartbreak after a tense penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in Rabat. The match finished level after regulation and extra time, forcing a decisive spot-kick showdown that ended 4-3 in favor of DR Congo.
The shootout was a rollercoaster. Calvin Bassey’s opening penalty for Nigeria went over the bar, while goalkeeper Samuel Nwabali made multiple crucial saves to keep DR Congo in the contest. Nigeria fought back through Akor Adams, Bruno Onyemaechi, and Chidera Ejuke, each converting under immense pressure, with Ejuke scoring despite a water bottle thrown at him from the stands. DR Congo responded through Noah Sadiki, Fiston Mayele, and Chancel Mbemba, the latter sealing their place in the inter-confederation playoffs in March.
Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 were dashed despite strong performances in both this match and the earlier games of the international break. DR Congo now advances, keeping their own World Cup dreams alive.
