Donald Trump Gives Iran 48 Hours to Reopen Hormuz or Face Strikes
President Donald Trump has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran, demanding the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to shipping or risk strikes on its energy infrastructure.
The warning comes at a moment of heightened tensions in the region, as Iran’s capital, Tehran, reportedly carried out its most intense attack yet against Israel. The development adds a new layer to a conflict that has already stretched for weeks.
Trump’s statement, posted on Truth Social, outlined potential military action against Iranian power facilities if the passage is not fully reopened within the stated timeframe, set to expire at 23:44 GMT on Monday. He indicated that any response would begin with strikes on major energy installations.
The ultimatum follows earlier remarks in which he suggested the possibility of scaling back military operations after three weeks of hostilities. Despite that, the latest escalation coincides with continued disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil transport, while additional American forces, including personnel from the United States Marine Corps, have been deployed toward the Middle East.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded by stating that restrictions at the strait apply only to vessels linked to countries involved in attacks against Iran. He added that ships from neutral nations would still receive assistance.
In a separate reaction reported by Iranian state-linked media, military officials warned that any escalation could prompt retaliatory strikes on energy and infrastructure assets associated with the United States and its regional partners.
