Dismissed Soldier Arrested for Armed Robbery in Osun
The Osun State Police Command has apprehended a 34-year-old dismissed soldier, Anthony Emmanuel, in connection with a series of armed robberies in the Esa-Oke community, Obokun Local Government Area. The suspect, along with three other dismissed soldiers, allegedly carried out the crimes while dressed in military uniforms.
Addressing the press, Police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola revealed that Emmanuel and his accomplices forced their victims into the bush, coercing them to transfer a total of ₦3 million before releasing them. The gang also robbed two individuals, Olawumi Oluwaseun and Ishola, stealing an iPhone 12 and an iPhone 13 valued at ₦1.25 million.
The Police Anti-Kidnapping Squad led the operation that resulted in Emmanuel’s arrest. Further investigations revealed that one of his accomplices, David Agbebaku, was detained in Oyo State for an unrelated crime.
During interrogation, Emmanuel confessed to the crimes, stating:
“David, another dismissed soldier, and I kidnapped a young man who transferred money into an account. David later transferred ₦2 million to my account. The military uniforms are mine; I bought the rank and wore it. David brought me from Ibadan to Esa-Oke for the operation.”
Emmanuel disclosed that he had served in the Nigerian Army for over 14 years, participating in a United Nations mission in 2014 and operations in the North East. However, he was dismissed in January for misconduct, including insubordination and desertion.
Expressing remorse, Emmanuel said:
“I know I have committed an offence against the military and Nigeria. I hope I can be forgiven. This will not repeat itself again.”
The police assured the public that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and bring them to justice.
