Discrepancies in Police Commissioner’s Statement as Abducted Family Transporting Deceased Relative Remains in Captivity – Corpse Released Amidst Crisis

The family of the late Israel Ugwuanyi is grappling with a harrowing ordeal as three members remain in captivity after armed assailants attacked them while transporting the deceased’s body to Ameze Owerre, Umabor community in the Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Contrary to the state police commissioner’s statement attributing the incident to a family dispute, the widow, Onyinyechi Ugwuanyi, and her brother-in-law, Collins Ugwuanyi, vehemently deny any such conflicts within the family.

The tragic incident unfolded when the Ugwuanyi family, mourning the loss of Mr. Ugwuanyi Israel, faced an ambush at Umuoka in the Udi local government area of Enugu State. Gun-wielding kidnappers seized the corpse and several family members who were accompanying it.

Despite the police commissioner’s assertion that there was no kidnapping involved, the family disputes this, emphasizing the peaceful nature of their household and expressing disappointment at the lack of support from law enforcement.

Collins Ugwuanyi provided a detailed account of the recovery of the deceased’s body by soldiers at 9th Mile. The military’s involvement raises questions, especially regarding how they obtained information about the abduction.

The family, now grappling with financial strain, revealed that the kidnappers have demanded a staggering ransom of N50 million. With their resources depleted due to extensive medical expenses for the late Israel’s prolonged illness, they appeal for assistance from well-meaning Nigerians.

The widow, Onyinyechi Ugwuanyi, urged the police commissioner to clarify the basis of his statement, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into the abduction and the family’s strained circumstances.
