DIG Frank Mba, Others Set to Retire as Seven AIGs Face Promotion

Senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force, including Deputy Inspector-General of Police Frank Mba, are set to retire as part of changes following the appointment of a new Inspector-General of Police.

The development comes after the exit of Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General and the confirmation of Olatunji Disu as the new head of the force. Disu was sworn in on Wednesday as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police.

Sources at the Force Headquarters said several Deputy Inspectors-General had begun preparing to leave their offices in anticipation of retirement.

According to one source familiar with the process, the officers had already started moving their belongings while awaiting official clearance to step down.

“The DIGs are ready to leave but are waiting for the signal. Many of them have already cleared their offices ahead of the transition,” the source said.

The retirements are expected to coincide with the promotion process for seven Assistant Inspectors-General of Police who are being considered for elevation to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General.

The officers scheduled to appear before the Police Service Commission in Abuja on Friday for promotion assessments are Margreth Ochalla, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, Ishiaku Mohammed, Zachariah Fera, Zango Ibrahim, Umar Shehu Nadada and Muhammed Abdul Sulaiman.

Their promotion would fill the vacancies created by the expected retirement of Mba and other DIGs.

Spokesman for the commission, Torty Kalu, did not confirm the development when contacted.

Mba, one of the officers preparing to retire, joined the police force as a lawyer. He earned a law degree from the University of Lagos and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2002 after completing his studies at the Nigerian Law School in Abuja.

He later obtained a Master’s degree in law with distinction from the University of Dundee in Scotland and attended professional training programmes at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, as well as leadership courses at Harvard University and University of Oxford.

During his career, Mba served as Commissioner of Police in Ogun State and later headed the Border Patrol Force at the Force Headquarters. He also held operational roles as Area Commander in Ajah and FESTAC in Lagos.
