Details of South-East Governors Forum, Stakeholders Meeting Emerge

The South-East Governors Forum convened on Tuesday, unveiling significant developments from their meeting with key stakeholders. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo led a delegation to meet with the governors, culminating in a decision to approach President Bola Tinubu to advocate for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Following an extensive seven-hour meeting, the governors announced a series of resolutions. A notable outcome was the establishment of a burial committee for the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, former Minister of Science and Technology. This committee will be chaired by former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim.

Senator Hope Uzodinma, Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum, expressed the forum’s condolences to the families of Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, and the entire South-East region on Dr. Onu’s passing. Uzodinma stated, “The Forum commiserates with the family of Ogbonnaya Onu and the entire South-East region on the demise of His Excellency Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.”

The forum’s meeting also included prominent figures such as former Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku and His Royal Majesty Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, who visited in solidarity. The governors reviewed the outcomes of the South-East security and economic summit held in Owerri, Imo State, on September 28, 2023. They committed to implementing the summit’s recommendations on regional security and economic integration.

“The Forum resolved to visit Mr. President to discuss all pressing issues concerning the South-East region,” Uzodinma added. “We will also interface with the Federal Government to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

The Ogbonnaya Onu burial committee will include notable Igbo leaders, with former Governor of Rivers State Chibuike Amaechi serving as the committee’s Secretary. The committee aims to ensure a fitting tribute to Dr. Onu, honoring his contributions to the region and the nation.
