Deputy Senate President Barau Demands Apology, Retraction From Trump Over Military Threat to Nigeria

Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, has demanded a public apology and retraction from US President Donald Trump following his recent remarks threatening military action in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians.

Barau condemned the statement as “unacceptable and un-American,” insisting that such threats violate international law and undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty.

“The President of the United States cannot just come out and say, ‘Oh, you are doing this, and we are going to attack you.’ Nigeria is a sovereign nation,” Barau said.

He urged Trump to pursue any concerns through legitimate international channels. “If there are genuine issues, the right path is through the United Nations—seek a resolution, follow due process. But resorting to threats is unacceptable,” he emphasized.

Barau maintained that Nigeria would not be intimidated, stressing that diplomacy and lawful engagement must guide international relations.

“We are not scared to say the truth. If Trump were here, I would tell him, ‘What you did goes against international law. The route you’re taking is not the right one,’” he added.

Trump’s comments, which suggested a possible US military strike on terrorist groups in Nigeria in response to alleged Christian genocide, have drawn global reactions and sparked diplomatic unease.

Observers warn that the remarks could strain relations between Washington and Abuja unless both sides move quickly to de-escalate tensions.
