Deputy Governor Shaibu’s Bid to Halt Impeachment Process Rejected by Court
Justice James Omotoso of the Federal High Court in Abuja has declined to grant an ex-parte motion filed by Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, seeking an interim order to halt the impeachment process initiated by the state’s House of Assembly.
In his suit, Shaibu had requested the court to restrict the third to fifth defendants from commencing any proceedings or setting up an investigation panel for his removal pending the hearing of a motion on notice.
Shaibu also sought an interim injunction to prevent the defendants, or their agents, from interfering with the subject matter of the Originating Summons filed in the suit aimed at preventing his removal from office as the deputy governor of Edo State.
However, in a ruling dated March 13, but cited on Monday, Justice Omotoso declined Shaibu’s prayers, stating, “That the Motion Expartee for Interim Injunction dated and filed 8th day of March 2024 is hereby refused.”
During Tuesday’s proceedings, the judge scheduled Wednesday for the hearing of another motion ex-parte brought by Shaibu, seeking substituted service on the defendants due to his inability to serve them.
