Defiant Homecoming: Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Receives Hero’s Welcome in Kogi Despite Ban
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan received a rousing welcome from her supporters in Kogi Central despite a government-imposed ban on public gatherings. The lawmaker, who has been embroiled in political controversy in recent months, arrived in Okehi Local Government Area on Tuesday, where she was met by an electrified crowd. Holding a Nigerian flag, she danced to local music and expressed her gratitude to the people, reaffirming her commitment to Nigeria’s sovereignty.
The reception defied the curfew imposed by Okehi Local Government Chairman, Amoka Monday, who had cited security concerns as the reason for the restriction. The curfew, aligned with the directives of the Kogi State Government and the police, was aimed at preventing unauthorized political rallies and potential unrest. Authorities had warned that anyone violating the directive would face arrest. Despite this, Akpoti-Uduaghan proceeded with her visit, insisting that no one could stop her from returning to her homeland. Addressing the crowd in Ebira, she proclaimed, *“Nobody and nothing can stop me from coming home. I’m an Ebira person; this is my land.”*
The senator’s return comes amid a storm of political challenges. Last month, she was suspended from the Senate for six months over alleged breaches of legislative rules. Simultaneously, efforts are underway to recall her from the Red Chamber, further fueling the tension surrounding her tenure. Akpoti-Uduaghan has alleged that her political persecution is linked to sexual harassment accusations she made against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, asserting that powerful interests are attempting to silence her.
The police had also banned her planned homecoming rally, citing intelligence reports suggesting that hoodlums might exploit the event to incite violence. However, her media team dismissed claims of a cancellation, and the event proceeded with supporters in full force. In a Facebook post, the senator warned that if any violence erupted, Nigerians should hold Akpabio, Governor Usman Ododo, and former Governor Yahaya Bello responsible.
As political tensions in Kogi State continue to rise, the defiant show of support for Akpoti-Uduaghan signals strong grassroots backing despite government restrictions.
