Vigilantes beat mentally unstable varsity student to death after campus intrusion

Security operatives attached to Nana College of Health, Ibana Okpo, in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, are under scrutiny following the death of a final-year student of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, who allegedly wandered into the school environment on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

The deceased, identified as Andrew Amehson Aziko, was reported to have been living with mental health challenges. Initial accounts suggest he had previously been taken home from Anyigba for treatment but later left a rehabilitation facility before ending up at the college premises.

Eyewitness accounts and video footage cited by local reports indicate that members of a vigilante team stationed at the institution confronted him, restrained him, and assaulted him with batons. He was later said to have been shot during the encounter.

The incident has triggered renewed concerns about the conduct of local security groups in the area. A witness described it as the second reported case of suspected extrajudicial killing in the local government within two months.

The matter first gained public attention after former Olamaboro Local Government Secretary, Danjuma Onoja, called for an investigation and accountability from authorities.

In a public statement, Onoja urged the local government leadership to probe the incident and ensure those involved are identified and prosecuted.

Footage circulating from the scene shows the victim speaking in Igala while appealing to the guards before the confrontation escalated. In the video, he appears to recognize one of the individuals present and responds to questions about his identity by referencing his father.

Reports further indicate that his father, a former lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University and known community figure, is deceased.

Family members who spoke on the incident described Andrew as non-violent despite his condition, insisting he had no criminal history. A relative, Monday Ujah, criticized the handling of the situation and questioned the response of the institution where the incident occurred, noting that the family had yet to receive official contact from the school authorities.

Andrew’s remains have been deposited in a morgue as investigations and formal identification processes continue. Local residents and stakeholders are calling for a thorough inquiry into the actions of the security personnel involved.
