Death Toll Surpasses 2,400, Abductions Reach 1,800 in Tinubu’s First 8 Months

A shocking report by Global Rights, an international civil society organization, reveals that during the first eight months of President Tinubu’s tenure, Nigeria has witnessed a devastating surge in violence. Disturbingly, over 2,400 Nigerians have lost their lives, while another 1,800 individuals have been abducted in various attacks across the nation.

Since assuming office in June 2023, President Tinubu, who pledged to address the longstanding issue of insecurity during his campaign, faces criticism as the country grapples with the relentless activities of terrorist organizations such as Boko Haram and ISWAP. In addition to these threats, bandits are now contributing to the growing menace, leaving communities in northern Nigeria vulnerable to violence and kidnappings.

The capital city, Abuja, once a symbol of stability, has witnessed a surge in criminal activities since November of the previous year. Killings and abductions have become alarmingly commonplace, prompting some families to resort to crowdfunding to secure the release of their loved ones from kidnappers.

Plateau State, in particular, is grappling with one of the worst attacks in its history, further exacerbating the nation’s security crisis. The report highlights the increasing danger of interstate travel due to road ambushes, with incidents like the abduction of 30 passengers near Katari along the Kaduna-Abuja highway and the kidnapping of 45 passengers in Orokam on the Benue-Enugu route.

Despite promises from the Tinubu administration to tackle insecurity and halt the relentless attacks, there is growing skepticism among Nigerians who have yet to witness any tangible improvements. The struggle against insecurity, persisting for over a decade, continues to cast a dark shadow over the nation’s future.
