Death Toll in Benue Attacks Rises to 56 as Governor Alia Seeks Federal Government Intervention
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has urged the Federal Government to take decisive action in addressing the rising insecurity in the state, following a wave of deadly attacks by suspected herdsmen in Ukum and Logo local government areas. The governor made the appeal on Saturday during a visit to the affected communities, where he assessed the destruction and consoled residents.
Speaking to journalists at the scene, Governor Alia condemned the violence that has now claimed at least 56 lives. He described the attacks on defenseless civilians as unacceptable and stressed the need for security agencies to intensify efforts to curb the recurring bloodshed.
During his visit, the governor met with community leaders and residents, assuring them of his administration’s commitment to improving security and providing necessary support. He called for calm, urging residents not to take the law into their own hands, and emphasized the importance of unity and trust in lawful authorities.
In response to the crisis, security has been reinforced in the Sankera axis—where the attacks occurred—to restore confidence among the population. Emergency relief and humanitarian aid have also been deployed to the affected areas to support victims and their families.
