Crackdown on Education Standards: Abia Govt Shuts Down More Private Schools
In a bid to uphold the quality of education within its borders, the Abia State government has announced the closure of additional private schools that failed to meet the prescribed educational standards. This move comes as part of the ongoing school inspection program initiated by the state.
The revelation was made by Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, during a briefing with journalists following this week’s Executive Council meeting. Kanu emphasized that the closures were executed in alignment with the “Reclaim Our Schools Initiative,” a program launched by the state government to elevate educational standards.
Providing insights into the ongoing inspection efforts, Kanu stated, “The inspection of schools is ongoing. At the last count, about 900 schools had been inspected. A few of the schools have not been so lucky. They fell short of the required standard and were shut down. That exercise is ongoing, and it speaks to the determination of the state government to reform the education sector.”
The state government’s commitment to holistic development was further highlighted, with plans for additional road commissions and rehabilitation projects. Governor Alex Otti is set to commission more roads, and the Ministry of Works has been directed to commence rehabilitation on Finbar’s road and Ahieke-Lodu roads in Umuahia.
In related announcements, Uzor Nwachukwu, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, disclosed that Transition Council Chairmen in the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) would serve a statutory term of six months, renewable by law. He also assured that the lists of councilors for the respective LGAs would soon be made public, further emphasizing the government’s commitment to transparency in local governance.
