Court Bans Kano-Based Tiktoker Murja Kunya From Social Media Amid Trial

The High Court in Kano State has issued a ban preventing popular Tiktoker, Murja Kunya, from engaging on any social media platforms. The decision came as part of the ongoing legal proceedings against Kunya, who stands accused of misdemeanor, improper conduct, and immoral behavior, offenses said to contravene Islamic laws of morality.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Nasiru Saminu during Kunya’s bail hearing on Monday, was confirmed by Baba Jibo Ibrahim, spokesperson for the Kano State High Courts. The court’s decision to restrict Kunya’s social media activity has stirred debate, with many questioning its implications on freedom of speech.

Kunya, who was arrested by the Islamic police, Hisbah, and subsequently charged, has been in custody since February 20, 2024. Justice Saminu, in granting her bail, set a bail bond of N500,000 and required two sureties for her release. One surety must be a blood relative, while the other must own landed property within Kano metropolis.

The judge cited Kunya’s prolonged detention as a factor in considering her bail application. However, he also imposed strict conditions, notably prohibiting her from accessing any social media platforms until the conclusion of the case. Furthermore, Justice Saminu instructed the Commissioner of Police to enforce the ban and arrest Kunya should she violate it.

The case is scheduled to resume on May 16 for further proceedings, as the legal battle surrounding Kunya’s social media presence continues to unfold.
