Court Adjourns Nnamdi Kanu’s N1 Billion Suit against FG, SSS until April 18

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has scheduled April 18 for the continuation of the N1 billion lawsuit filed by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), against the federal government and the State Security Services (SSS).

The adjournment was declared by Justice James Omotosho following the indication by Mr. Kanu’s counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, of his intention to respond to a counter affidavit jointly filed by the SSS.

Upon the resumption of the hearing, Gbenga Oladimeji, representing the federal government, informed the court of their pending response, citing recent notification of the process.

Meanwhile, Abdul Danlami, the SSS lawyer, stated that they had already filed their counter affidavit opposing Mr. Kanu’s plea.

In response, Mr. Ejimakor requested an adjournment to file a further affidavit addressing new issues raised by the SSS, to which Justice Omotosho acceded, fixing April 18 for the adoption of processes.

Mr. Kanu initiated the lawsuit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1633/2023, seeking the enforcement of his fundamental rights while in detention, including damages for alleged breaches.

In the counter affidavit filed by the SSS on March 12, the security agency refuted Mr. Kanu’s allegations, asserting that he was in secure custody with access to legal counsel and family members.

They also contended that the lawsuit was an abuse of court process.

The case has drawn significant attention amid ongoing legal battles surrounding Mr. Kanu’s detention and trial.
