Court Acquits Five Biafra Agitators After Two Years in Detention
An Abia State High Court in Umuahia has acquitted five pro-Biafran agitators who had been held in detention since their arrest in July 2022. The judgment, delivered by Justice A.O. Chijioke, marks the end of a prolonged legal battle for their freedom.
The defendants were charged with conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, and membership in an unlawful society under case number HU/61C/2022. However, the court found insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations, leading to their release.
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), confirmed the verdict during a press briefing in Owerri. He praised his legal team, led by Dennison Agu and supported by Chinwe Umeche and others, for their tireless efforts to secure justice.
“We are deeply gratified by this ruling, which underscores the importance of a fair judicial process,” Ejiofor said, reaffirming IPOB’s commitment to securing the release of all innocent pro-Biafrans detained across the country.
He also encouraged pro-Biafrans to remain peaceful and law-abiding in their pursuit of self-determination, emphasizing that their struggle is a legitimate constitutional right.
