Controversy Surrounds Labbadia’s Appointment as Super Eagles Coach: NFF Board Members Cry Foul
The recent appointment of German coach Bruno Labbadia as the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles has sparked significant controversy within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Multiple senior NFF officials have expressed dissatisfaction, alleging that the decision was imposed on them by NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and Sports Development Minister, Senator John Enoh.
Contrary to an official NFF statement claiming that both the technical committee and the executive board unanimously endorsed Labbadia’s appointment, several board members have come forward to dispute this, stating they were not adequately involved in the decision-making process.
During the final stages of selecting a new coach for the Super Eagles, concerns were raised by both the NFF technical committee and the board members, who felt sidelined. The subsequent NFF board meeting, where Labbadia’s appointment was announced, reportedly lasted only a short time, leaving no room for further discussions or objections.
Further investigations reveal that former Super Eagles captain and World Cup veteran, Austin Okocha, was a key advocate for Labbadia’s appointment. Okocha’s connection with the German coach dates back to their time in the Bundesliga, where Okocha played for Eintracht Frankfurt, and Labbadia was a striker and later a manager for several clubs, including VfB Stuttgart.
Labbadia, 58, was a late contender for the Super Eagles coaching role, but he reportedly secured the position due to strong “political support” from Sports Minister John Enoh. This backing is believed to have given him an edge over other candidates, including former Sweden coach Janne Andersson and Herve Renard, according to senior NFF officials.
The controversy has cast a shadow over Labbadia’s appointment, raising questions about transparency and the decision-making process within the NFF.
