Commissioner of Police Aderemi Adeoye Retires After 35 Years of Service, Honored with Anambra Citizenship
In a memorable ceremony at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, on Saturday, Anambra’s Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, retired from active service after a distinguished career spanning 35 years. The event was a vibrant display of gratitude and appreciation for his contributions to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.
Mr. Adeoye, known for his leadership and commitment to combating crime, officially retires from the force but will hand over to his successor on May 1, 2024. In his farewell speech, he expressed profound thanks to the Nigeria Police and the nation for their investment in his career, both domestically and abroad.
Throughout his service, Mr. Adeoye’s assignments took him to some of the most challenging regions in Nigeria. He served in the Niger Delta, where he fought against militancy for five years, and led the police mobile force in Maiduguri, engaging with Boko Haram for two and a half years. He also played a key role in a combined force against the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the five southeastern states during his tenure as deputy commissioner of police.
Reflecting on his service, Mr. Adeoye acknowledged that despite facing direct confrontations with guns and bombs, he emerged without a scar, attributing his safety to divine intervention. “I thank Nigeria and the police for investing in me and giving me the opportunity to serve,” he said.
Mr. Adeoye’s service in Anambra was characterized by strong community relations and a commitment to public safety. He praised the people of Anambra for their hospitality and emphasized that the small percentage of individuals involved in criminal activities did not represent the hardworking and positive-minded population of the state.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo, represented by his deputy, Onyekachukwu Ibezim, commended Mr. Adeoye’s leadership, noting that he joined the Anambra Police Command during a period of heightened insecurity. The governor remarked that Mr. Adeoye played a critical role in reclaiming a significant portion of the state from insurgents.
In recognition of his service, a street was named in Mr. Adeoye’s honor, and numerous stakeholders, including traditional rulers, captains of industry, and community leaders, celebrated his contributions at a grand reception at the International Convention Centre. Additionally, a book titled “X-ray of CP Aderemi Adeoye’s Leadership Principle, Eulogy to a Crime Fighter,” written by Sgt Chioma Obi, was unveiled at the event.
As Mr. Adeoye embarks on his retirement, he does so with the heartfelt gratitude of his colleagues, the Anambra community, and the nation at large. His legacy as a dedicated and courageous crime fighter will be remembered for years to come.
