Clergy Split Over Pastor Adeboye’s Advice on Choosing a Wife

A group of senior Christian clerics has pushed back against recent marriage guidance by Enoch Adeboye, who advised men not to marry women who cannot cook.

Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, made the remarks during the May edition of the Holy Ghost Service. Addressing young men, he warned against choosing partners based solely on physical appearance, saying such decisions could lead to what he described as a “deep trap.” He urged men to prioritise spiritual discernment and practical domestic skills.

Referencing biblical figures known for hospitality, Adeboye argued that cooking ability should be a key consideration in marriage. He added that even prophetic assurances should not override such practical concerns.

However, the Ecumenical Synods of Bishops, Archbishops, Apostles and Senior Clergy rejected the position, describing it as a personal opinion rather than a biblical standard.

Speaking on behalf of the group, its International Secretary, Osazee William, said cooking should not be used as a primary criterion for choosing a spouse. He noted that both men and women can acquire domestic skills over time and stressed that character should take precedence.

“Marriage decisions should be based on godly values and industrious character, not just cooking ability,” he said, adding that a person may be skilled in cooking but lack other essential qualities.

William also pointed to changing economic realities, where some women serve as primary earners and may have limited time for domestic responsibilities. In such cases, he suggested, households could outsource cooking rather than treat it as a defining marital requirement.

Adeboye’s comments also extended to other aspects of relationships, including wedding expenses and personal appearance. He cautioned men against proceeding with marriage plans if financial demands could lead to debt, and advised them to look beyond outward beauty, warning against excessive use of cosmetics.
