Chimamanda Adichie Welcomes Twin Boys, Announces First Novel in 11 Years
Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has welcomed twin boys with her husband at the age of 47. The news was revealed during an interview with The Guardian on Saturday, where Adichie shared insights into her life, writing journey, and decision to keep her children’s birth private.
The twins were born in April 2024, but Adichie chose not to disclose the news earlier to protect them. She acknowledged that Nigerians often express curiosity about public figures’ personal lives, which makes her more cautious about sharing details. “I want to protect my children. I’m okay with having them mentioned, but I don’t want the piece to become about them,” she stated.
The celebrated author is set to release her first feature-length novel in 11 years, titled *Dream Count*, in March. The book explores love, desire, and the complexities of womanhood through the experiences of four distinct women. Adichie explained that her hiatus from fiction writing was unintentional and began when she became pregnant with her first child. She described the struggle to reconnect with her creative self, fearing that she might never write another novel again. “I had a number of years in which I was almost existentially frightened that I wouldn’t write again. It was unbearable,” she admitted.
Adichie and her husband, Nigerian doctor Ivara Esege, have been married since 2009. The couple welcomed their first daughter in 2016. Beyond her literary achievements, Adichie is widely recognized for her contributions to feminism and discourse on politics, culture, race, and gender. Over the years, she has received numerous accolades, including the United Nations Foundation’s Global Leadership Award in 2019. She has also been featured on New African’s list of ‘100 Most Influential Africans,’ New Yorker’s ‘20 Under 40,’ and Time Magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People.’
