“There Are Good Men”: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Urges Young Women to Choose Partners Wisely

Acclaimed Nigerian author and feminist icon Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has advised young women to be intentional and discerning when choosing a life partner, stressing that the decision can have a profound impact on one’s future.

Speaking at the *Dream Count* event, Adichie emphasized the need for women to seek personal fulfilment and to resist societal pressure to marry for the wrong reasons. According to her, settling for the wrong partner—particularly out of desperation—can derail a woman’s growth and happiness.

“It’s so important for a woman to have her own, a sense of self-fulfilment, it doesn’t matter what it is,” Adichie said. “It is really important who you choose. Sometimes, as a young woman, you can tell that the person you are with is not a good person, but you are desperate to get married. Do not settle. Be careful who you choose.”

The award-winning novelist further encouraged women to seek kindness and support in their partners, insisting that such qualities can be life-changing. “The person you choose as a life partner will make a huge difference in your life,” she added. “If you choose someone who is kind and supportive, it will make all the difference. There are good men out there.”

Adichie’s remarks quickly sparked conversations across social media, where many women echoed her sentiments and shared personal stories.

One user, @alhaja\_wendy, noted: “Well said. Who you choose to marry will affect your destiny either positively or negatively.”

@her\_majesteeze wrote, “She spoke facts. Who you choose to marry will affect your destiny.”

Another user, @dr\_pinesol, shared, “I am grateful to my partner, God’s gift to me. Peace of mind and his kindness wan wound me.”

@olajumokebabes simply described the message as “Feminine and powerful.”

Echoing the theme, @thefoodnetworknig2 offered a pointed take: “Your father sponsored your education to master’s level in good schools, but then you decide to choose someone who would not let you do something tangible with your life… you have not only failed yourself, you have also failed your father.”
