“Chiemeka Chibuzor Wedding Is Hereby Suspended Despite Hundreds of Expressions of Interest from Men” — OPM Announces Amid Backlash Over Marriage Plans
Omega Power Ministries (OPM) has suspended plans for the wedding of the daughter of its founder, following widespread public reaction and growing debate over the proposal.
Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere had earlier announced a search for a husband for his 21-year-old autistic daughter, Chiemeka. The announcement triggered a large number of responses, with hundreds of men expressing interest. Some applicants submitted written appeals, while others sent video messages describing their willingness to marry her and offer care and support.
The level of attention quickly drew criticism from members of the public and online commentators, who raised concerns about consent and the vulnerability of the individual involved. Some critics also referenced a recent case involving the cleric’s autistic son, arguing that both situations raised broader ethical questions about decision-making on behalf of adults with disabilities.
In response to the backlash, OPM announced the suspension of the planned wedding. In a Facebook post, the church stated that it had received more than a thousand applications but that the process had been halted pending further direction from the church leadership.
The statement read in part: “Chiemeka Chibuzor wedding is hereby suspended… Pending further directive.”
The development has continued to generate discussion, with some members of the public calling for a review of earlier arrangements involving the cleric’s son, citing concerns around consent and protection of vulnerable adults.
