Chief Justice of Nigeria Summons Judges Over Kano Emirate Dispute

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has summoned the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and the Chief Judge of the Kano State High Court to address conflicting interim injunctions concerning the Kano Emirate tussle.

The Federal High Court in Kano, under Justice S. A. Amobeda, recently issued an interim order for the eviction of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II from the Kofar Kudu Palace. This decision supports the authority of Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano.

Conversely, Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu of the Kano State High Court issued an injunction protecting Muhammadu Sanusi II and other key figures from potential harassment by state authorities. This order aims to safeguard the Emir’s autonomy and prevent the seizure of key symbols of his authority, including the twin spear, the Royal Hat of Dabo, and the ostrich-feathered shoes.

These conflicting orders have created significant confusion regarding the rightful authority and protection within the Kano Emirate. The Federal High Court will further deliberate on its case on June 4, while the State High Court’s case is scheduled for June 13.

This summons by the CJN seeks to resolve the judicial contradictions and restore clarity to the situation.
