Chaos in Enugu Community: Two Policemen, Three Vigilantes Killed

Igga community in Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu State was plunged into chaos as two policemen and three members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group lost their lives in an attack by a gang of hoodlums.

The incident unfolded on Friday evening when the hoodlums launched a brazen assault at Ada Rice Production Nigeria Limited, a farm settlement near the community. The attack came in the wake of suspected ESN members’ operation aimed at repelling herders who had attacked the nearby Nimbo community earlier in the week.

Following the onslaught on the security operatives, a retaliatory action allegedly ensued as combined security forces, including soldiers and policemen, reportedly invaded the community on Saturday night. Reports surfaced of houses ablaze, motorcycles destroyed, and properties looted amid the chaos.

A viral video captured the intensity of the situation, depicting the community engulfed in flames while pleas for help echoed in the background. Subsequent protests by women and children further underscored the gravity of the situation, amplifying calls for intervention.

Amidst the turmoil, a villager recounted the harrowing ordeal, detailing the destruction unleashed by the security operatives during their incursion into the community. Tragically, the violence claimed the life of one resident, Richard Okoye, who fell victim while attempting to flee the chaos.

Confirming the tragic loss, the Enugu Police Command attributed the attack to “harboured criminal members of the Igga Community,” condemning the unprovoked assault on law enforcement and vigilante personnel. The command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, revealed the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the ambush of a security team tasked with safeguarding visiting investors.

Despite the arrests of suspected perpetrators and subsequent recovery of the slain officers’ bodies, the community remains gripped by fear and uncertainty, grappling with the aftermath of the senseless violence that has shattered lives and left a community in mourning.
