CBN warns against ‘money bouquets’ ahead of Valentine’s Day
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned that arranging banknotes into “money bouquets” amounts to abuse of the naira, placing the practice alongside offences such as spraying, squeezing, selling and defacing the currency.
A money bouquet is created by folding notes into petal shapes and assembling them to resemble a flower arrangement, often given as a gift.
In a notice shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the CBN reminded the public of actions that constitute misuse of the naira and urged Nigerians to report violations. The post read: “It is your civic duty to protect the naira. Report naira abuse today.”
The bank cited provisions of the CBN Act, which prescribe a minimum six-month prison term or a fine of at least ₦50,000 for anyone found guilty of tampering with the currency.
The warning comes days before Valentine’s Day, a period when money bouquets are commonly exchanged as gifts. The CBN said enforcement agencies are intensifying action nationwide and provided toll-free hotlines for reporting incidents of naira abuse.
