Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Withdraw from ECOWAS Amid Tensions and Sanctions
The military regimes of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have jointly declared their immediate withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The leaders of these Sahel nations cited the decision as a “sovereign choice” amidst challenges related to jihadist violence and economic struggles within their borders.
Tensions between the said nations and ECOWAS have been escalating since the coups in Niger last July, Burkina Faso in 2022, and Mali in 2020. The announcement follows the suspension of all three countries from ECOWAS, with Niger and Mali facing substantial sanctions as a consequence of their actions.
In recent months, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have solidified their stance by forming an “Alliance of Sahel States.” The withdrawal comes at a critical juncture, with the French military’s retreat from the Sahel region raising concerns about potential conflicts spreading southward towards Gulf of Guinea states, including Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Ivory Coast.
The prime minister appointed by Niger’s military regime criticized ECOWAS for alleged “bad faith” after the bloc avoided a planned meeting in Niamey. Niger had hoped for a diplomatic resolution to address differences with fellow ECOWAS member states. However, the organization responded by imposing severe economic and financial sanctions following the military coup that ousted elected president Mohamed Bazoum.
