Boy Sets House Ablaze After Stealing Foodstuffs; Arrested
An 18-year-old boy identified as Olawumi Ayomide has been arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) for allegedly stealing foodstuffs and subsequently setting a house ablaze.
According to a statement from Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, the fire broke out on Wednesday at approximately 12:11 PM in a three-bedroom bungalow located at No. 59, Afenifere community, Onireke, Gaa-Akanbi area.
Fire service teams responded quickly to the emergency and arrived to find the residence engulfed in flames. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within 25 minutes; however, two rooms were completely destroyed, along with valuable items such as a mattress, important documents, a plasma TV, and clothing.
Investigations revealed that the fire was set intentionally by a group of thieves who had stolen foodstuffs, groceries, and clothing from the house. As community members confronted the gang, they resorted to arson in a desperate attempt to evade capture.
Olawumi Ayomide, one of the three suspects, was apprehended by locals after reportedly stabbing a man twice during his escape. He was handed over to Mr. Azeez Jamiu, the community chairman, who then transferred him to the NSCDC Tanke Division for further action.
Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, urged residents to remain vigilant and prioritize safety in their communities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
