Borno Bombings: Military Plans Crackdown as Reps Begin Probe
In response to the tragic suicide bombings in Borno State last Saturday, the Defence Headquarters has labeled the attacks as cowardly acts by Boko Haram terrorists. Despite claiming significant degradation of the insurgents, the DHQ has pledged a decisive clampdown on the terrorists responsible.
Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, Director of Defence Media Operations, addressed the media on Tuesday, detailing the coordinated attacks in Gwoza Local Government Area. The bombings, involving multiple person-borne Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), claimed 32 lives by Monday, with several others still hospitalized.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on National Security and Intelligence to investigate the attacks, acknowledging their severity and impact both locally and internationally.
General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, expressed condolences to the victims and attributed the bombings to terrorists’ attempts to retaliate against recent military successes. He emphasized that such acts are meant to conceal the insurgents’ weakening position and instill fear in the populace.
Troops have imposed curfews and intensified efforts to apprehend the perpetrators, aiming to prevent further casualties and restore community safety. The military urges citizens to remain vigilant and support ongoing security operations.
The House of Representatives, through a motion of urgent public importance, highlighted the need for enhanced intelligence gathering and community engagement to forestall future attacks. Members called for robust legislative measures to combat terrorism and ensure national security.
Ahmed Jaha, representing Damboa/Gwoza/Chibok Federal Constituency, stressed the devastating impact of the bombings on local communities and underscored the critical role of intelligence in preventing such tragedies.
Former Deputy Speaker Idris Wase also emphasized the urgency of tackling terrorism and urged the government to pursue the sponsors of criminal activities across the country.
