Billboard Names 50 Greatest Afrobeats Songs of All Time, Nigerian Stars Dominate (Full List)

Billboard has unveiled its first-ever ranking of the 50 Best Afrobeats Songs of All Time, with Nigerian artists taking center stage in a list that celebrates the genre’s evolution and global reach.

Released on August 19 after being rolled out in stages, the list highlights Afrobeats pioneers, chart-topping hitmakers, and modern stars whose music has pushed the sound onto the world stage. Unlike Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat of the 1960s, Afrobeats is a hybrid genre that blends highlife, hip-hop, R\&B, dancehall, and African rhythms. Since emerging in the 2000s, it has grown into Nigeria’s most influential cultural export, sparking international collaborations and shaping the sound of the African diaspora.

Billboard explained that the ranking was curated with input from editors and contributors across Nigeria, the United States, and the United Kingdom, and was based on cultural impact, stylistic representation, and commercial success. To ensure balance, each artist was limited to three songs on the list.

Topping the chart is 2Face Idibia’s iconic “African Queen,” hailed as a landmark track that helped introduce Afrobeats to international audiences. Wizkid secured two spots in the top 10 with “Ojuelegba” at number two and the Tems-assisted “Essence” at number five. Flavour’s “Nwa Baby (Ashawo Remix)” and Rema’s global hit “Calm Down” claimed the third and fourth spots respectively.

The rest of the top 10 features CKay’s “Love Nwantiti,” D’banj’s “Oliver Twist,” Davido’s “Fall,” Burna Boy’s “Ye,” and P-Square’s “Chop My Money (Remix)” featuring Akon.

Billboard emphasized that the list goes beyond popularity, describing it as a recognition of the songs that form Afrobeats’ foundation while also defining its global trajectory.
