Biden Orders Secret Service Protection for Independent Candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
US President Joe Biden has mandated Secret Service protection for independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. This decision comes in the wake of an attempted assassination on former President Donald Trump, as announced by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Monday.
“Given the events of this weekend, the president has instructed me to coordinate with the Secret Service to ensure Robert Kennedy Jr.’s protection,” Mayorkas informed journalists during a press briefing.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a member of America’s prominent Kennedy family, is an environmental lawyer and a vocal vaccine skeptic. While his prospects of winning the presidency in November are slim, his candidacy holds the potential to influence tight races in critical swing states.
Earlier in the day, Trump had publicly called for extending Secret Service protection to Kennedy. “In light of what is happening globally, it is crucial that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. receives Secret Service protection immediately. Considering the history of the Kennedy family, this is clearly the right decision!” Trump stated on social media.
The 78-year-old Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, a shocking incident that has further intensified the already polarized political climate as the nation approaches the November election.
