Biafra Day: Ebonyi Students Defy IPOB Sit-at-Home Order to Write WAEC Exams

In a notable act of defiance, secondary school students in Ebonyi State participated in their West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams on Thursday, disregarding the sit-at-home directive issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The sit-at-home order, announced by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, was intended to commemorate Biafra Day on May 30. IPOB regards this day as a solemn occasion to honor those who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970, and beyond. “Annually, we celebrate the 30th of May as our heroes’ and heroines’ day, remembering the men and women who died that we may live,” IPOB stated. The group called for a complete shutdown of activities in Biafra territory, encouraging residents to stay home in remembrance of the fallen.

Despite these directives, students across the three zones of Ebonyi State proceeded with their exams under the vigilant supervision of the Commissioner of Education, Prof. Nwobasi.

Prof. Nwobasi praised the state governor, Francis Nwifuru, for ensuring the safety of the students during this period. “The provision of adequate security in our schools has been instrumental in allowing our students to continue their education uninterrupted,” he said.
