Benue: Widow, Six Children Hospitalized After Consuming Pap
A family of seven was urgently hospitalized on Sunday after consuming pap (Akamu) in the Egba community of Agatu Local Government Area.
The affected family includes Amina Isah, a widow, her four children, and two grandchildren. According to local resident Adaji, the family started vomiting after consuming the pap and was rushed to a nearby private clinic.
Dr. Oyaje Sule, also known as Dr. Gana, who operates the clinic, confirmed the incident to journalists in Makurdi. He reported that three members of the family, including the widow, were unconscious when they arrived at the clinic.
Dr. Sule explained that the family mistakenly used remnants of guinea corn mixed with chemicals intended for planting to prepare the pap. He stated, “It is true they brought a woman I know in the community, along with her children and grandchildren, totaling seven, to my clinic this morning. The woman and two others were unconscious, but they have since been revived.”
The ages of the children range from three to 30 years, with their grandmother being elderly. The children were identified as Benjamin, Piko, Esther, Hassan Emmanuel, and one other.
Dr. Sule further elaborated, “After consuming the contaminated pap, the family experienced severe vomiting and unconsciousness before being brought to the clinic, where they received immediate medical attention.”
The swift response and treatment at the clinic have been crucial in stabilizing the family members.
