Benue State Farming Communities Under Siege as Herdsmen Attacks Intensify

Farming communities in Benue State are reeling under a wave of violence as attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen escalate, leaving a trail of death and destruction.

Recent investigations have unveiled a grim reality, with at least 28 lives claimed in the span of a week. Among the victims are six brave security operatives from the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards and Livestock Guards, slain in a series of attacks across three communities in Gwer West Local Government Area.

Chairman of Gwer West LGA, Mr. Henry Agba, confirmed the harrowing incidents, revealing that the assaults spared no one, leaving several others injured and traumatized.

The assaults come on the heels of a mass burial for 17 victims of previous attacks, underscoring the relentless nature of the violence. In Apa Local Government Area, bandits ravaged nine communities, leaving death and destruction in their wake, with casualty figures still being tallied.

The horror extends across Ukum, Gwer-East, and Agatu Local Government Areas, where communities like Gbagir, Mbalom, and Ogboju have been ravaged, with survivors recounting tales of terror and loss.

In the face of such adversity, farming, the lifeblood of these communities, has become a perilous endeavor. The once-fertile lands now lie fallow as farmers are forced to abandon their fields in fear of the marauding attackers.

Local authorities, grappling with the crisis, have vowed to bolster security measures to protect the vulnerable farming populace. However, the challenges persist, with livelihoods hanging in the balance and hunger looming large on the horizon.
