Bayelsa Poll: I Would Have Relocated My Mother To Abuja If Diri Had Lost – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan praised Governor Douye Diri’s successful re-election in the recently contested Bayelsa poll, highlighting the positive impact on the state’s security landscape. Jonathan, a former governor of the oil-rich state, visited Diri in Yenagoa, commending his efforts in tackling insecurity and expressing relief that the gains made in the past years would be sustained.

During the gathering, Jonathan emphasized the need for unity and support for Governor Diri, stating, “Results have been declared, and we believe the election was conducted. We believe the governor won the election, and we plead that people should accept it and work with the governor. Let all of us support him so that the state will move ahead.”

Jonathan further revealed the personal stakes he had in the election, saying, “I was saying before this election that if Diri loses this election, I would have relocated my mother to Abuja.” He underscored the importance of maintaining the progress achieved in curbing cultism and kidnapping during the governor’s tenure.

Recalling a personal tragedy, Jonathan shared, “My cousin was kidnapped two times, and on one of those occasions, one of my cousins, Solo, was killed because they threw him into the river and he didn’t know how to swim.” Despite the challenges faced, Jonathan expressed optimism that Diri’s return would mark the end of such security issues.

In conclusion, Jonathan urged citizens to allow Governor Diri to focus on governance, emphasizing the collective goal of propelling the state forward for the benefit of its citizens. Governor Diri received his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) earlier in the day, gearing up for a second term in office, set to begin with his swearing-in next year.
