Bandit Incursions Escalate in Federal Capital Territory, Sparking Concerns for Residents
In a worrisome trend, bandits are infiltrating the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), heightening tensions among the populace. Sources reveal that these attackers discreetly enter communities through river or bush paths from neighboring Niger and Kaduna states, where they have established camps, often eluding security checkpoints.
The surge in attacks, especially since November of the previous year, has resulted in numerous casualties, either during operations or within their camps, where victims failing to meet ransom demands are executed.
Communities on the outskirts of Bwari town, including Tukolo, Baran-Goni, Kuduru, Zuma, as well as remote areas like Igwu, Shere, Kawu, and Mpape, bear the brunt of these escalating assaults. Concerns are rising not only for residents but also for key government institutions in the Bwari Area Council, housing strategic entities like the Nigerian Law School, Federal Government Girls’ College, and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
The situation is exacerbated by residents being forced to sell property at reduced prices to fund ransom payments. Reports indicate that kidnappers are increasingly demanding unconventional items, including mobile phone recharge cards, provision items, and even special motorcycles.
The plight extends beyond individuals, with farmers abandoning fields due to bandit activities. The situation has prompted calls from residents for a special joint operation against the kidnappers, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to address the root causes of the issue.
Amid these challenges, a retired military captain who recently escaped from a bandit den highlighted the role of informants in aiding kidnappings. The situation has prompted the military to launch offensives against the perpetrators, with ongoing operations yielding arrests and rescues.
As the security situation remains precarious, residents and authorities are anxiously awaiting effective measures to quell the rising threat in the nation’s capital. Efforts to obtain a response from the FCT police command on the matter have, however, proven unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
