Auto-Crash Claims 13 Lives in Kogi – FRSC
13 individuals lost their lives while two sustained injuries in a fatal auto crash in Kogi state, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Samuel Oyedeji, the sector commander of FRSC in Kogi, revealed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. The collision involved a commercial Sharon Bus and an articulated Cement Truck near Obajana Market along Obajana-Lokoja Road in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi.
Oyedeji explained that the Sharon bus had stopped behind a truck near the market for passengers to make purchases when the cement truck, due to brake failure, collided with it from behind. Tragically, the impact ignited a fierce fire, engulfing the bus and its occupants. Additionally, two trucks and a motorcycle were also consumed by the flames.
The bus was reportedly en route to Abuja from the southern region of the country. Despite the efforts of rescue teams from FRSC, Red Cross Nigeria, and the police, they were unable to save the victims due to the intensity of the blaze.
While the two injured individuals were rushed to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana, for medical attention, the charred remains of the deceased posed a challenge. Oyedeji expressed concern as no hospital in Kogi agreed to accommodate the bodies, potentially leading to a mass burial if no relatives claimed them.
The sector commander lamented the incident as “very sad and unfortunate” and urged motorists to prioritize safety by avoiding speeding and ensuring proper vehicle maintenance before embarking on journeys.
