Atiku, David Mark, Amaechi, Obi attend Bolaji Abdullahi’s book launch in Abuja

Prominent political figures on Tuesday gathered in Abuja for the unveiling of *The Loyalist: A Memoir of Service and Sacrifice*, a new book by Bolaji Abdullahi, national publicity secretary.

Among those present were Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, national chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation, and Kayode Fayemi, former governor of Ekiti State. Peter Obi, Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2025 election, also attended the event.

Other guests included Rauf Aregbesola, former minister of interior; Liyel Imoke, former governor of Cross River State; Aminu Tambuwal, former governor of Sokoto State; Abdulfatah Ahmed, former governor of Kwara State; and Emeka Ihedioha, former governor of Imo State, among others.

Speaking as special guest of honour, Atiku commended Abdullahi for producing a book that examines the meaning of loyalty in public life. He described the work as a contribution that challenges fixed assumptions about allegiance and responsibility in politics.

Drawing from his experience of nearly four decades in politics, Atiku said loyalty in civilian politics differs significantly from that in military institutions. He noted that political loyalty often comes at a personal cost.

He recounted facing exile and surviving assassination attempts, which he attributed to decisions rooted in loyalty. According to him, such experiences are not uncommon among political actors who choose principle over convenience.

Atiku stressed that loyalty should serve shared objectives rather than restrict inclusion. He argued that genuine loyalty must be anchored on accountability, transparency, and openness to differing views.

He added that leaders and those seeking public office must recognise that loyalty in a democratic setting should protect the dignity of citizens and encourage diverse perspectives, rather than silence disagreement.
