Atiku Abubakar: Tinubu’s Government Veering Towards Authoritarianism
The former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has leveled sharp criticism against the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu, accusing it of sliding towards authoritarianism in Nigeria.
Abubakar, a prominent figure in the opposition, underscored the vital role of participatory governance in curbing excessive executive powers and ensuring accountability to the populace. However, he expressed grave concern over what he perceives as a departure from democratic principles under the current government. He pointedly criticized the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, for what he described as its subservience to presidential directives rather than serving as a robust check on executive authority.
Recent events in the Senate have exacerbated these concerns. Abubakar highlighted instances such as Senator Abdul Ningi’s reprimand for raising issues related to budget irregularities in the 2024 Appropriation Bill, which he argued warranted thorough investigation rather than punitive measures. Similarly, Senator Ali Ndume faced consequences after advocating for urgent measures to alleviate poverty.
In addition, Abubakar condemned what he deemed misplaced government priorities, citing lavish expenditures on presidential aircraft and a yacht amidst widespread economic challenges facing ordinary Nigerians. He cautioned that such actions not only undermine democratic principles but also heighten the risk of increased authoritarianism.
The former Vice President called for a concerted effort to uphold democratic values and urged lawmakers to prioritize the welfare of citizens above political expediency. He warned that failure to address these issues could further weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions and worsen the country’s socio-economic conditions.
