Asue Ighodalo Emerges as PDP Candidate in Edo Governorship Primary

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially named prominent businessman Asue Ighodalo as its candidate for the upcoming Edo State governorship election, following a keenly contested primary.

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, serving as the Chairman of the Edo PDP Primary Electoral Committee, announced the victory on Thursday. Ighodalo secured 577 votes, triumphing over nine other aspirants, including the current Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.

The primary election took place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in the Edo State capital, setting the stage for Ighodalo’s candidacy in the gubernatorial race slated for September 2024.

“I, therefore, declare Asuelimen Ighodalo the winner of this concluded primary today with a total vote of 577. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen,” Governor Dauda Lawal stated, as reported by Channels TV. He officially returned Ighodalo elected as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the forthcoming election in Edo State.

The All Progressive Congress (APC) is currently grappling with uncertainties in selecting its flag bearer for the gubernatorial election. The earlier primary election declared inconclusive led to the replacement of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma as the chairman of the State Primary Election Committee. Senator Bassey Otu has been named as the new Chairman to oversee the concluding part of the election, scheduled for Thursday. The initial election, conducted by Uzodimma, was marred by irregularities, resulting in three winners emerging as the APC governorship candidates.
