The Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Delta State has entered a period of mourning following the death of Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo, a member of the Umu Obi Obahai royal lineage and younger brother to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. He died on May 30, 2026.

The announcement was made by the Palace Secretary, Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, in a statement confirming the development to the public.

According to the palace, the traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku, His Royal Majesty Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II, described the late prince as a family-oriented figure whose role within the royal household was marked by loyalty and steady involvement. The monarch noted that his passing has left a significant gap within both the immediate family and the wider royal structure.

Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo was described as a husband, father, brother, and uncle whose presence was closely tied to the internal life of the royal family. The palace statement emphasized his place within the Umu Obi Obahai lineage, a branch regarded as central to the history and traditions of the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom.

The monarch further stated that the late prince would be remembered for his calm disposition and commitment to family responsibilities. He added that his memory would remain with those who knew him personally within the community and the royal court.

He is survived by his wife, daughter, siblings, and extended family members. The palace extended condolences to the bereaved family and called for continued support and prayers during the mourning period.

The royal household also urged indigenes of Ogwashi-Uku, both within Nigeria and in the diaspora, to stand with the family as they navigate the loss and begin funeral arrangements.
