The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has appointed Afam Ogene, the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State, as its new spokesperson.

The appointment was approved during an online caucus meeting held on Friday, June 19, and announced in a statement issued on Saturday by the Minority Leader of the House, Fredrick Agbedi.

According to Agbedi, the decision reflects the caucus's confidence in Ogene's ability to communicate its positions on national issues and strengthen engagement with the public.

Ogene, a ranking member of the House and leader of the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDP) Caucus, brings years of legislative experience to the role. Before joining politics, he worked as a journalist and editor.

The Minority Caucus said his experience in both the media and the legislature makes him well suited to coordinate its public communications and manage relations with the press.

As spokesperson, Ogene will speak on behalf of the caucus on policy matters, legislative activities, and issues of national importance. He is also expected to provide regular media briefings.

The caucus said the appointment is aimed at improving its public engagement while strengthening its oversight of the executive and reinforcing checks and balances in the 10th National Assembly.

"Hon. Ogene brings to the role a wealth of legislative experience, a deep understanding of parliamentary procedure, and an unflinching commitment to the defence of democratic ideals," the statement said.
