The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dayo Faduyile, winner of the Ondo South Senatorial District by-election held on Saturday.
The Returning Officer for the election, Gbenga Solomon-Ibileye, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja, announced the result on Sunday at the collation centre in Okitipupa Local Government Area.
According to the official results, Faduyile secured 68,474 votes to emerge victorious.
The candidate of the Allied People's Movement (APM), Adeolu Akinwunmi, came second with 1,411 votes. Adesanya Olaoluwa of the Action People's Party (APP) polled 213 votes, while Clement Funso-Nejo of the Boot Party (BP) received 70 votes.
INEC said a total of 70,770 votes were cast in the election, with 602 rejected ballots.
Speaking after the announcement, Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mutiu Agboke, described the by-election as an important exercise ahead of the 2027 general election.
He said the commission identified minor operational challenges that would help improve future elections, adding that election officials deployed to riverine communities returned safely and that no major incidents were reported during the exercise.
The by-election was conducted across six local government areas: Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Irele, Odigbo, and Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo.
The election became necessary following the appointment of former senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
