Argentina Crush Nigeria 4–0 to End Flying Eagles’ U20 World Cup Dream
Argentina ended Nigeria’s hopes at the FIFA U20 World Cup with a commanding 4–0 victory on Wednesday night in Santiago, Chile. The six-time champions were in ruthless form, eliminating the Flying Eagles and securing a measure of revenge for their defeat to Nigeria at the same stage two years ago.
Alejo Sarco opened the scoring just two minutes into the match, setting the tone for a dominant Argentine display. Maher Carrizo extended the lead in the 23rd minute with a superb free-kick after Nasiru Salihu conceded a foul on the edge of the box. Nigeria struggled to find their rhythm and were denied a penalty shout when Ramirez appeared to trip Salihu inside the area.
Despite a few bright moments from winger Oseer Achihi, who troubled Argentina’s defence with his pace and delivery, the South Americans maintained control. Just before halftime, Daniel Daga came close to reducing the deficit, but his effort was expertly saved by goalkeeper Santino Barbi.
Carrizo added his second in the 53rd minute to make it 3–0, and substitute Matheus Silvetti completed the rout with a well-placed finish in the 66th minute, curling his shot beyond goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt.
The heavy defeat ended Nigeria’s campaign at the Round of 16, a disappointing outcome for the two-time runners-up who had entered the tournament with high hopes. Argentina’s victory reaffirmed their pedigree at this level, booking their place in the quarterfinals with confidence and style.
