South Africa Reacts to Shocking World Cup Points Deduction by FIFA, Reveals Next Step
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has denounced FIFA’s decision to dock three points from the country’s 2026 World Cup qualifying tally, calling the sanction unjust and without precedent.
In a statement released on Monday, SAFA said it was shocked by the ruling and criticized FIFA for not allowing the association an opportunity to defend itself before the penalty was imposed. According to SAFA, the decision was made by a single member of FIFA’s disciplinary committee without a transparent explanation.
The deduction, which reduces South Africa’s total from 17 points, has thrown Group standings into uncertainty and ignited debate across the continent. The sanction stems from allegations of fielding an ineligible player, a move that has already drawn widespread attention and reaction from rival nations.
SAFA has vowed to pursue all available legal and diplomatic avenues to challenge the ruling, arguing that it undermines principles of fair play and natural justice. “As custodians of South African football, we cannot stand by while decisions of this magnitude are imposed on us without transparency,” the association said.
