Arab-Islamic Summit Calls on Nigeria, Other Nations to Help Resolve Israel-Palestine Conflict

 

 

The Joint Arab-Islamic Summit, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has tasked Nigeria and other nations to take a leading role in seeking peace between Israel and Palestine, amidst escalating conflict in Gaza and Lebanon.

 

According to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, the media aide to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, the summit established a Ministerial Committee dedicated to fostering international engagement toward ending the conflict. President Tinubu joined other key leaders from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the League of Arab States at the summit, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to regional stability.

 

The Ministerial Committee, led by Saudi Arabia, comprises the foreign ministers of Nigeria, Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, Indonesia, Palestine, and Jordan. This committee, formed by a 2023 resolution during the first Joint Arab-Islamic Summit, aims to mobilize resources and diplomatic efforts to facilitate an immediate ceasefire and establish long-term peace in the region.

 

The summit communiqué urged the committee to extend its mission beyond Gaza, also addressing ongoing conflicts in Lebanon. The committee will produce regular updates for the OIC and League of Arab States members, spotlighting the progress of its peace-building initiatives.
