Anthony Joshua Speaks Out After Lagos-Ibadan Crash That Killed Two Friends

Anthony Joshua, two-time world heavyweight boxing champion, is in stable condition following a serious road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two close associates.

Joshua’s management and promoter, Matchroom Boxing, confirmed that Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele—also known as Kevin ‘Lateef’ or ‘Latz’—died in the crash on December 29.

Ghami, a strength and conditioning coach and co-founder of London’s Evolve Gym, had worked with Joshua for more than a decade, helping to shape his power and endurance. Ayodele, Joshua’s personal trainer, was also involved in fitness projects and humanitarian initiatives in Nigeria.

The crash occurred around 11 a.m. local time when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck. Initial reports from the Federal Road Safety Corps pointed to excessive speed and a risky overtaking maneuver. Ogun State police later noted a possible tire burst as a factor in the vehicle losing control.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a key route connecting Lagos to other regions, is known for heavy traffic and frequent accidents.

Joshua, who was seated in the rear, suffered injuries but remained conscious and able to communicate with family. He was taken to a specialized hospital in Lagos for observation, with no emergency procedures required.

The 36-year-old boxer, fresh from a sixth-round knockout of Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, was visiting Nigeria during the holiday season. Social media posts earlier in the day showed him sharing casual moments with Ayodele, including a table tennis game.

Tributes from the boxing community followed, including a message from Jake Paul: “Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted.” Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also called Joshua to offer condolences.

Matchroom Boxing requested privacy for the families affected, expressing “deepest condolences and prayers” for all involved.
