Another PDP Federal Lawmaker Defects to APC
Amos Magaji, the representative of Zangon Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, announced Magaji’s defection during Tuesday’s plenary session. Citing internal crises within the PDP as the reason for his move, Abbas called on APC lawmakers to welcome Magaji into their ranks.
However, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda opposed the defection, referencing Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which stipulates that lawmakers who switch parties risk losing their seats. Chinda insisted that Magaji’s defection should lead to his removal from the House. His objection was met with loud disapproval from many lawmakers.
In response, Speaker Abbas advised Chinda to submit his concerns in writing to the appropriate authorities.
While the constitutional provision on defections seems clear, it could be noted that a legal proviso exists, potentially offering a loophole for defecting lawmakers.
