Anambra: Surge in Cult Killings, Kidnappings Sparks Public Outcry

An alarming wave of insecurity has gripped Anambra State, raising concerns among residents and sparking accusations of inadequate government response. The situation has deteriorated notably since the retirement of former Commissioner of Police, Mr Aderemi Adeoye, with residents expressing frustration over perceived lapses in security measures under the leadership of Governor Prof Chukwuma Soludo.

The escalation in violence, particularly cult-related killings, has intensified fears across the state. In the span of a week, at least eight youths lost their lives in such incidents, marking a troubling trend. The Anambra State Police Command had issued a preemptive warning ahead of the notorious “7/7” cult celebration, underscoring its zero-tolerance stance and threatening punitive measures against violators.

However, despite these warnings, incidents persisted. Eyewitness accounts from Awka detailed a chilling episode where gunmen in a black SUV fatally shot a local beer vendor, leaving residents shaken and fearful. Further reports indicated additional killings in Awka, including a gruesome incident where assailants severed a victim’s hand.

Kidnappings have also surged, with multiple incidents reported in a single day. Gunmen brazenly targeted motorists, including one incident captured on amateur video near Nnamdi Azikiwe University, illustrating the audacity of criminal elements operating in broad daylight.

Political figures and residents alike have condemned the escalating violence, placing blame on both law enforcement and governmental leadership. Former gubernatorial candidates like Mr Valentine Ozigbo and Mr Oseloka Obaze criticized Governor Soludo’s administration for failing to curb the rising insecurity, citing a string of kidnappings and unchecked criminal activities across the state.

In response to these criticisms, the state police command assured ongoing efforts to address the abductions, although specifics on other reported incidents were not disclosed. Meanwhile, concerns over cult-related violence persist, exacerbated by the surreptitious burial practices adopted by families fearing police confiscation of their loved ones’ bodies.

As Anambra State struggles with this security crisis, calls for immediate action and enhanced security measures have intensified. Residents demand decisive steps from Governor Soludo to restore safety and quell the pervasive fear gripping communities statewide. The coming days will test the resolve of authorities to contain the violence and reassure citizens of their safety.
