Anambra Police Ban Agunechemba, Other Vigilante Groups from Polling Units Ahead of Governorship Election
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has announced a ban on members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group and other local security outfits from operating around polling units during the upcoming governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.
During a statewide tour on Monday, Orutugu directed all vigilante members to stay away from election venues, stressing that their involvement in security duties during the polls is not permitted. “Every Agunechemba member should stay away from polling units. You are citizens like everyone else—vote peacefully and go home. From 6 p.m. on the eve of the election, no vigilante should appear in uniform near any polling station,” he warned.
The Commissioner underscored that maintaining law and order during the election is the sole responsibility of the Nigeria Police Force and other recognized security agencies. He met with community leaders, including Agunechemba Commander Chief A.K. Ilobi and the President General of Ihiala, Hon. Levy Omatu, to strengthen coordination and ensure peaceful conduct throughout the electoral process.
Orutugu commended the gradual restoration of peace in Ihiala, acknowledging the logistical challenges faced by the police but assuring residents of improved presence and support during the election period. He urged Anambra citizens to remain peaceful, vigilant, and cooperative with security operatives to guarantee a safe and credible vote.
Chief Ilobi described the police commissioner’s visit as timely, emphasizing the need for additional vehicles and infrastructure to help sustain the improving security situation in the state.
Residents were also advised to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities through the Command’s emergency lines — 112 or 07039194332.
